• A yellow fever vaccination is essential for any person a year or over planning to visit the country.

• All forms of water in the country should be considered potentially dangerous and avoided where possible. Overall supplies of water are low in the country. Swimming pool water should be safe in the cities but should be checked beforehand. All meat, fish and vegetables should be thoroughly cooked before eating. Food and drink served from vendors is best avoided.

• Malaria is a year round threat in the country and precautions should be taken by visitors to the country at all times. Sensible measures include wearing long sleeved clothing with little skin on show and using plenty of insect repellent. Early symptoms of the disease include fever, light headedness and intense abdominal pains. Travellers suffering these symptoms should visit their nearest doctor immediately.

• Additional vaccinations against tetanus; hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tuberculosis, meningococcal meningitis, dengue fever, typhoid and cholera are strongly advised.
Rabies is spread from wild animals and can prove fatal if untreated. Travellers visiting the wilder parts of the country should take care of any animals encountered and should immediately seek out the nearest medical facilities if affected.

Tourists should keep their valuables in a safe location at all times. A passport page or similar identification should be kept for inspection when travelling in the country at all times.

• Travel at night, especially alone, is strongly advised against because of the high risk of assault. Drivers should be aware of the poor road conditions and the lack of decent street lighting.

• Military and government facilities should not be photographed and any pictures taken may be removed without warning by the security services. Homosexual behaviour is illegal. Travellers should avoid any protests or demonstrations occurring during their stay and should check the political situation prior to beginning their flight.
